Frequently Asked Questions

What is the New Jersey Veterinary Foundation?
The NJVF is the charitable arm of the New Jersey veterinary community. It is a 501,©, 3 tax exempt organization.

What is the goal of the organization?
The Foundation is dedicated to reducing animal suffering and to supporting and enriching the human-animal bond – that special relationship that grows between humans and their pets.

When was the NJVF Founded?
The Foundation was established in 1975 as the New Jersey Veterinary Education Fund for the purpose of offering financial aid to New Jersey veterinary students.

Why provide financial aid to veterinary students?
Because New Jersey does not have a veterinary school, New Jersey residents wishing to become veterinarians are forced to seek their education out-of-state, where they are required to pay higher tuition fees. Today, New Jersey veterinary students commonly graduate with more than $100,000 in school-related debt.

How has the Foundation changed over the years?
In the mid-1990s the Foundation took on its current name and since then has expanded its activities by providing financial support to private, non-profit organizations that operate a variety of animal welfare programs. The Foundation supports programs that promote better animal health and welfare, and activities like therapy animal programs, which use the human-animal bond to brighten the lives of people in institutions such as hospitals and nursing homes.

Where does the money come from to support the Foundation's programs?
Contributions come to the Foundation from individual veterinarians, veterinary practices and the general public. The Foundation's primary public fundraiser is the Ride for the Animals bikeathon, generally held on the third Sunday in September. Individual cyclists and teams solicit pledges from friends and colleagues for each mile they will cycle. Walkers and runners also participate. Individuals frequently contribute to the Foundation in memory of a beloved pet and veterinarians make memorial contributions in memory of patients. All contributions to the Foundation are tax-deductible.

What is the Animal Hall of Fame?
The Animal Hall of Fame was established by the Foundation in 1996 to honor the special animals that make a difference in people's lives. Awards are given each year in the categories of Hero, Companion, Professional and Therapy. The NJVF Award is given to an individual who works to improve the care and dignity of animals. The awards are presented annually at a luncheon during the first weekend in March and winners are placed in the Hall of Fame page in this website.
